Bad Art, Big Faith: Finding God Through Doodoo-dles and Disasterpieces
Do you ever find yourself looking for a deeper relationship with God and understanding of the Bible? One thing that proved helpful to me was exploring more creative ways of studying scripture. Now, I know what you may be thinking, I don’t have any artistic talent whatsoever, and a kindergartner could draw circles around me.
Well, let me answer you by saying, that when it comes to art, I am right there with you… But once, I decided to let my “inner kindergartner out” and give it a try, I was amazed by the results. Not the quality of my art per se… That will not win any awards but just my ability to become more consistent with my Bible study and better retain what I learned.
Some of my favorite ways include:
Sketchnoting Sermons: Capture the main ideas of a sermon through a combination of doodles, words, and symbols. It's like visual note-taking that makes Scripture memorable.
Bible Journaling: Transform your Bible into a visual diary of your spiritual journey by adding things like personal reflections, drawings, or stickers on its pages.
Lettering Scripture: Try uniquely writing your favorite Bible verses by trying different styles and layouts.
Doodling: Let your imagination flow by incorporating doodles into your Bible study. Doodling helps engage your mind, making the learning experience more enjoyable.
So I encourage you to give it a try! Here's a quick guide:
Gather your materials: Grab some pens, pencils, markers, stickers – whatever you have on hand!
Pick your creative worship format: This may be doodling while reading scripture, sketching main ideas from a sermon, or adding artistic flourishes while lettering your favorite verses. When it comes to exploring faith creatively, there are no such things as mistakes – just happy accidents and opportunities to grow. So give yourself full permission to create without judgment.
Explore freely: Now let that inner kindergartner take the lead! Whether you want to letter Bible quotes in bubble letters, color in shapes relating to key ideas, or illustrate the feelings a passage brings to mind, create with an open heart and do what works for you!
Reflect on insights gained: After you're done creating, take a moment to think about what meaning, memories, or connections this experience brought you. Remember, the end result isn't the main goal - your personal growth and spiritual journey is what really matters.
