🎲 Jesus Turns Water Into Wine, But Can He Beat Grandma at Monopoly?
😬Awkward Gatherings, Anyone?
We’ve all been there. You’re at a holiday gathering, attempting to balance a plate of cookies in one hand and a cup of punch in the other, making small talk about the weather for the third time with your second cousin once removed. Or you’re at a church Christmas party where everyone smiles politely but never quite moves past surface-level chitchat.
The holiday season is supposed to be about togetherness, but sometimes our gatherings feel more obligatory than meaningful. We check the box on “family and friends time” without actually connecting. We attend events without truly being present.
But what if there was a simple way to transform those awkward moments into authentic connection? What if the key to deeper community was something as simple as busting out with a deck of cards? Now before you think I’m promoting gambling with Aunt Ruth, keep reading… 😉
🍷 Jesus wasn’t Only a Carpenter, He was a Bartender
God loves a good celebration with community. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s people gathering for feasts and festivals. Jesus celebrated too, including wedding parties (and made sure the wine didn’t run out)! The early church broke bread together in homes, sharing meals and their lives. Developing relationships was central to His mission.
😂 Verily I Say Unto Thee: Get Thyself to Game Night!
Sometimes we treat spiritual life like it should always be serious. But joy and laughter are gifts from the same God who designed platypuses and giraffes!🦒
Joy is holy. Scripture talks about joy as strength, fruit, and a gift from God. We are meant to laugh, to rest, to play, and to breathe in the goodness of God together.
And yes, “rejoice always” is actually a command:
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5)
❄️ Your Holiday Strategy: From Tacky Sweaters to True Fellowship
Hanukkah, Christmas, and the rush into the New Year are the perfect times to tap into the spiritual power of play. These are the moments when people gather with the hope of connecting beyond “So, how about those cookies?” without things getting weird.
Here’s the truth: we are living through a loneliness epidemic, even during the most wonderful time of the year. You can sit at a crowded Christmas table and still feel invisible. We try to perform the perfect holiday and forget to be present with each other.
That’s where games come in! 🧩
🎲 Glory to Gaming for the Gospel
A well-chosen game gives people permission to be playful, vulnerable, and real. It breaks down the invisible walls we build around ourselves. It creates shared laughter, which opens hearts for deeper conversation.
When you’re debating whether you’d rather fight one horse-sized duck or a hundred duck-sized horses, you’re not thinking about that awkward family drama from 2019. You’re laughing. You’re engaging. You’re connecting. ✨
Games give everyone something to do, because let’s be honest, staring at your phone in the corner isn’t fellowship. They level the playing field for introverts, extroverts, and that one guy who always brings his guitar to every gathering. They help brand-new friends and longtime friends open up without anyone having to say, “So… how’s work?”
And here’s the bonus: When you’re playing a Christian-themed game, you create open doors to talk about faith, values, and Jesus, with anyone who is there without it feeling forced or preachy. Because sometimes the warmest evangelism looks like kindness, laughter, and a welcoming table. 💖
🎄 Christmas Games
Nativity Charades: Act out characters from the Nativity story. Bonus points if Uncle Bob nails his sheep impression. 🐑
Christian Christmas Trivia: Mix traditional Christmas questions with Bible knowledge. “How many wise men visited Jesus?” (Trick question - the Bible doesn’t say! 😜)
Ornament Storytelling: Everyone shares a story inspired by an ornament. Others guess if it’s real or made-up, and points are awarded accordingly!😁
✡️ Hanukkah Games
Dreidel with Discussion Questions: Assign each side a prompt. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Something you’re grateful for ✨
A time God provided for you 🙏
A prayer request 💙
A funny holiday memory 😂
A tradition you’d like to start next year 🎉
A way you can be the light in someone’s life🕯️
Antiochus Freeze Dance: Play upbeat music. When it stops, everyone freezes in a “heroic” Maccabee pose (or something that is Hanukkah related - any human menorahs out there? 🕎😂). Whoever moves is “captured” by Antiochus and out of the game.💪
🎉 New Year Games
Prayer Pictionary: Draw prayer requests or new year goals. Example: someone draws “peace in my home” or “not hitting the snooze button 3 times every morning.” Others guess, whoever gets it first, gets a point, and then pray over all the requests at the end.
Vision Board Game Night: Provide magazines, scissors, glue, and poster board (cut and use old cereal boxes or packages). Create vision boards while discussing prayers and goals (don’t forget to throw in a couple fun ones!) for the new year. After everyone shares their boards, take time to pray over each person’s dreams (Yes, even the goal to finally learn how to make sourdough counts! 😋)
🎈 All-Season Favorites
Would You Rather: Christian Edition: A hilarious, faith-filled game with questions perfect for sparking laughter, reflection, and real conversation. ❓Free printable below!
Testimony Jenga: Write faith-based and funny questions on blocks. Pull one, answer, then stack it back. Keep going until all the blocks fall over.
💡 When Laughter Leads to Life Change
Here’s where the magic really happens.✨
A silly “Would You Rather” question about singing worship songs in opera style can lead to someone sharing their favorite worship song, which leads to them telling the story of when God met them during a dark season, which leads to someone else opening up about a tough situation, which leads to spontaneous prayer in your living room.
Games create the space. The Holy Spirit fills it. Vulnerability inspires vulnerability. Joy opens the heart. Laughter makes people feel safe.💕
This is especially powerful when non-believers are present. Instead of trying to "share the gospel" at them, you are creating an environment where they can simply feel loved. They get to see genuine Christian community, not a performance. Sometimes evangelism looks like kindness, laughter, and a welcoming table.❤️
📱 Don’t Let It End When the Game Does
Here’s my challenge: don’t let the connection stop when you pack up the game.
Send a text: “I’ve been praying about what you shared last night. How are you doing?”💬
Follow up on shared interests: “I didn’t know you like hiking! Want to go next week?” 🥾
Create a group chat. Share encouragement. Share ridiculous memes. Make plans to gather again.
The game is just the doorway. Real community is what happens when you keep walking through it.🚪
🎉 Your Turn: Host a Game Night!
Another challenge for you - Host a game night. 😊
It can take place this holiday season (or anytime)! It doesn’t have to be fancy. You don’t need Pinterest-worthy decorations or a catered meal. Order or make frozen pizzas. Use paper plates. Keep it simple. 🍕
Just gather some people, pull out a game and see what God does when His people choose to be present, playful, and real.
Let yourself rest. Let yourself laugh. Let yourself enjoy the people God has placed in your circle. And let a simple game help you create moments of faith and friendship that last far beyond the holidays. ✨
